Even When He is Silent
I believe in the sun, even when it’s not shining.
I believe in love, even when I feel it not.
I believe in God, even when He is silent.

St. Olaf Choir - "Even When He Is Silent" - Kim André Arnesen
There are two accounts for the origin of this poem, both in Germany at the time of World War II. One account has the verse inscribed on the wall of a concentration camp and the other attributes the poem to a carving on the wall of a cellar in Cologne, Germany. It is believed to be from a Jewish person either a prisoner in the concentration camp or in hiding in the cellar. In either case the poem provides a dramatic testament to the human spirit still shining despite the darkness.

“Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window … peep in at the queer things which are going on, … it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

“What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind.”
